EarthCare is a community space run by the Henry Doubleday Research Association Australia. ‘Henry’ is a not for profit organisation that focuses on organic growing.
Its parent organisation in Britain https://www.gardenorganic.org.uk/ was begun by Lawrence Hills, a freelance journalist and keen organic grower. He was passionate about promoting the potential of the herb Comfrey as a natural fertiliser and the benefits of organic growing as a whole. EarthCare is used by members of HDRAA to showcase organic and sustainable ways of living; hosting workshops, research and lectures and days for fetes and fairs that promote sustainable living and organic agriculture and horticulture.
Members can access their own plot for growing vegetables for their family, the extensive library, and share veggies that are grown throughout the gardens. They are always looking for willing helpers as EarthCare is situated on half a hectare and takes a lot of upkeep.
Please come along on a Tuesday or Saturday to meet the regular crew (10am to 4pm). They can organise for you to join and help you get started with work in the shared gardens or your own plot. Membership fees: Family $40, Individual: $30, Concession: $20 per annum. A quarterly newsletter is sent out to members with gardening tips, recipes, a kid’s page and other interesting articles (staff and technology permitting – we are all volunteers). Come for a cuppa and a tour on Tuesday or Saturday and see what you think.
